Mazda 6 Radio Reset Code

Posted by Steve
The battery in my wife's 2004 Mazda 6 died and had to be replaced. As a result, the radio insisted that we enter the security code before it could be used again. Problem: we didn't have the code. After a few guesses (0000, 1234, etc) it locked us out. I visited the dealership and was told that they would have to hook up some dedicated equipment and call Mazda to get it re-activated, and that it would cost about £50. This sounded like bullshit to me, so I went away and spent a while searching the various Mazda forums. Eventually I found this thread over at Mazdaforum.com. In case the forum post disappears, here are the steps with a couple of additional steps from forum member Steve G6:

1) After you see ERR on the screen, turn the ignition off and back to ACC
2) Press each of these buttons one at a time: preset 6, AM, Auto M, Seek ^ (up).
3) Input this number: 4989.
4) Press and hold Auto M and Preset 6 together.
5) The word 'GOOD' will appear on the screen indicated that the radio will work.
6) Turn the ignition off and then back to ACC
7) Reprogram new antitheft code into radio as per instruction manual.

Easy when you know how!

First, it worked on my Mazda Tribute 2002 - thanks!

To set a new code (as nagy asked):
First, cancel any existing code (you need to know the code!) Then:
    1. With radio off, ign switch in ACC
    2. Press Auto-M and 6 simultaneously for ~ 2 secs, 'CODE' appears
    3. Auto-M and 6 simultaneously again, four dashes appear
    4. Input new code (see below)
    5. Auto-M and 6 simultaneously, 'CODE' flashes for 5 secs and disappears

To input a code (step 4), press the '1' the required number of times for the first digit,
'2' the required number of times for the second digit, '3' for third, '4' for fourth

To cancel a code, same as above EXCEPT at step 4, enter current code,
at step 5 hold Auto-M + 6 for ~ 2 secs, 'CODE' appears, should disappear after ~5 secs.
If 'Err' appears, repeat from Step 4.

    Mine still says code.
Do I have to block it first to show error before I follow the instructions?

@kastor - Yes, I believe it needs to show ERR on the screen before you can reset it using the instructions in my post.

Hi.thank you very much for posting this on the Web. When we went to pick our 54 reg mazda6 up after being in for a service we were informed that the battery had been removed and did we have the radio code? We did indeed NOT have the code. As it was the weekend and unable to take it to an auto electrician til Monday we took to Google and found your post.we did as instructed and it's all working perfectly again.thank you again.you have potentially saved us a small fortune.

I found that the best way for getting a radio code for any mazda is by following the guide on the website below...

  10. Hi can some please assist.

I am trying to put the error code into my Mazda Tribute 2002, but when I enter the code " let's say the numbers below the screen is the way of entering code.. Once I enter the gist number using the "1" key button how do I enter the number into the next Colum as the next numbers will not allow me to use them as a way of entering. Could anyone please assist?

Hi guys. Name is Michael and I live in London, UK. Bought a Mazda 3 TS2 2005 and had the CODE flashing across the screen. Eventually managed to get it to say ERR and no matter what I tried, I hit a brick wall. I have struggled with this for an hour or so, going back and forth from the laptop to the car about 10 times. And I live on the second floor of a 2 stories house :-). Fun, huh? Eventually I came across the answer on here: Mazda 3: I have a Mazda 3, 05 plate, the Bose radio flashes

OK, here is what I have found in the end that worked for Mazda 3 2005:

Press the power button and FM for ten seconds. That's it. No thousands of combinations and endless button pressing and silly codes. I hope it will work for you too. Bless.

Thank you! This eventually worked for my Mazda 6 2005 1.8 base model radio (not Bose). Took 5/10 attempts. I changed the battery. The radio said CODE, windows weren't operable from the drivers' door except the drivers window itself, and the clock couldn't be adjusted. Fixing the radio allowed the clock to be adjusted. The windows required resetting separately.

My system has broken down on my 2016 mazda 6 and now I only receive one radio station and cannot play CDs. How do I fix this?
